Chinese Panda Coins
China's panda coins have long been a favorite of coin collectors and jewelry designers. China began issuing the limited-edition gold panda coins in 1982 and collectors began scooping them up. Interest peaked in the mid 1980s, as did the prices. Today it can still be hard to find the coins minted in the early 80s, but new coins are being issued each year and silver panda coins were introduced in 1997 to allow collectors with smaller budgets to enjoy the popular panda coins.
The obverse of both the silver and gold panda coins depict Beijing's Temple of Heaven (Tien Tien) and the date of issue, while the reverse features a new design each year depicting the endangered Giant Panda.
